West Midlands police have issued a stark warning to iPod users: ditch the white headphones or pay the price.

Fashion-conscious music lovers are apparently being targeted by muggers. The Times tells the sorry tale of 22-year-old language student Roland Baskerville, who lost his 20GB model on the mean streets of Birmingham: "I was walking down the road near to my home when a man who was walking the other way pointed at my headphones."

The thief then asked Baskerville if he was listening to an iPod and, receiving an affirmative answer, he "pulled a knife out and started waving it at me, saying: ‘Well hand it over, then.’ I gave it to him and he ran off. He must have known I was wearing an iPod because of the white headphones."

I've been reserving the white phones only for in home use.

You don't have to show off, just knowing you have the ipod is good enough

Thumbs up

I see people with the white phones and smile inside, but I switched to a pair of Sony ones instead. I chose function over fashion (for a change).

I bought some Sonys, but they're white as well, but a lot smaller.. I've been reading articles about this sort of thing happening for a while now.. unless someone pulls a gun on me, there's no chance they're getting my ipod.. either im gonna run like hell, or im gonna kick some ass.. my ipod stays with me.

i sat on my white headphones and one of them, the right one, snapped from the post. i've been using big clunky panasonic's since then, but i've thought about keeping a low profile on the white as well.

l think this is so far an isolated incident. its such a simple thing but took over a decade before apple makes it an ipod trademark, love those white earphones.

Rather than start a new thread, I thought it best to ask this question of iPod users. I am thinking of getting a new iPod and either the Belkin iPod Voice Recorder, or the Griffin Tech. iTalk. Any opinions on either product? I intend to use it to record children reading aloud while I assess their oral reading miscues and comprehension.
