Sorry if this isn't the right place for this, but my question: what would you say is the value of a 1st gen 5GB ipod? Works fine, about 1.5 hours of battery life on full charge, and it has new earbuds.
I need opinions to fairly settle how much a friend owes me for losing mine. . .
I'd say the same... assuming you were able to find one for sale, I doubt it would demand more than $40-50.

Go for replacement value rather than money-sucking sites like the one quoted above.
I'd say $75 since you could easily have kept using that iPod for years, and because you'll now have to go through the hassle of replacing it.
If one loses something belonging to a friend, one should replace it with a similar item, or better. You could direct your friend to Apple's iPod refurb store.
Frankly if you're only going to get $50 for it, I'd keep it as a collector's item.
I'm keeping mine and just recently picked up a new battery from OWC for $8.

Perhaps read the first post.
