I have also had my ipod stolen. It was Friday night at my friend’s party. By about one oclock I put my ipod in the bottom of my back pack under a sweater and a bandana or two the head phones were still in my pocket. My bag was only three feet behind me as I took two pictures of some friends I had not seed in a while, planning to put them on my ipod nano when I got home. This never happened because when I turn around to put my camera back in my bag I realized that my ipod was not at the bottom of my bag. No one could have known it was there except the person who watched me put it there. I can’t think of any other way someone could have know it was there. The thing which angers me the most is that everyone who was there I knew quite well, and I thought was good friends. Obviously I was well deceived. Now four days later I have abandoned hope of getting my ipod back still very pissed and looking at the head phones does not help. I am now looking into buying a larger nano and have thought twice about who my friends are. I just wish I knew who took it and I don’t think I should state what I would do to him if I found out.
Sorry to hear that, "midnighttoker". Bummer, dude. What a buzzkill.
Anyhoo, welcome to ehMac.

Ouch man. I feel your pain. It makes me sick to think that someone watched you put your iPod somewhere and jumped on it so quickly. The exact same thing happened to me. I think the worse feeling is that someone else might know who did it, unless this person was somehow very discreet about rooting through someone's backpack and pocketing an iPod. Then again, it's a party. So much going on, not ideal for investigating a crime!
Make sure your report your serial to the police with a report of theft. Also, call Apple and give them your serial # and the date you bought the iPod. They will flag it as stolen in case anyone calls them up, sends it for repair, etc.
Insurance isn't worth going through if you have it. Doesn't this make you wish Apple could track it!? Here's a petition type deal: http://www.stolenipods.com/
