I would love to have an ipod or other mp3 player. I run a power macintosh G3 with an 8.6 operating system (willing to upgrade if i have to) Does anyone have any advice?
Yes, you need OS X, but OS X 10.2.8. I recommend Panther or Tiger. What version do you have?
USB 2 is not required...? I used my iPod with my USB 1 PC, back in the days.
Okay it was slow, but I don't think it's required.
You should be able to use your iPod in OS8.6 for mp3 files. Unfortunately, you won't be able to play the proprietary Apple files from the iTunes store on your G3 unless you are using a newer version of iTunes in OSX.
If you plug your iPod into the USB port you should see it show up on your desktop as a drive. You should be able to transfer files to and from the iPod the same way you would do it with any other external drive.
In order to play mp3 files on your B&W you will need some third party mp3 player software. There were lots of shareware players available for download. Audion now provides their software as a free download. The early versions of iTunes will work on OS9 and I know there was a hack to allow it to run on OS8.6 but you're better off just getting Audion. The early versions of iTunes won't play tunes from the iTunes store anyway, but you can still play mp3s.
I don't have an iPod but I do have an Creative MuVo Tx mp3 player. It works fine just transferring mp3 files back and forth, it's just not as convenient as having the software do it all for you.

If your G3 doesn't have USB built in it must be one of the first generation G3s that came in a "Beige" coloured case.
Don't despair, it's very easy to add a USB PCI card to these machines. They're not very expensive now either ($15 to $30). You do need to be careful about choosing the right ones since not all USB cards are recognized in older Macs. Look for a used USB version 1 card for best compatibility and lowest price.
Your best bet is to buy a card from a Mac retailer that can confirm the card will work in your machine.
