using an external drive on itunes

I want to hookup my external HD and it hold most of my mp3s now I know when I add music to my itunes program it send the files to /music/itunes/itunes library but I don't have enough space on my laptop HD to hold the 250GB on my external, is there a way to add a playlist without the mp3s being copied to the laptop dir?

Hi,

I have all my songs on my external drive (I like to live dangerously). I am not sure what you are asking.

Where are the MP3's coming from that they could potentially load on your laptop? You can direct iTunes where to place your MP3's or if you are downloading from "other" sources then the program you use can direct the MP3's to the external drive. Like I said, I am not sure what the question is.

change the location of the iTunes Music Folder or disable Copy Files to iTunes Music Folder, both found under in the Preferences under the Advanced tab.

this was information I had been trying to find for some time! thank you!

now does anyone know if you can do something similar with i photo?

will I need to delete the files on my laptops HD to make space or have i effectively moved the files?

forgive me as I am a new mac owner and was never much of a computer person to begin with!
