retail used iPhone stores

Father in law is looking at getting a used iPhone for emergency use.
Drives the back roads of southern Ontario a lot. (lives just south of Owen Sound)
5s should do him fine.
He has an iPad, so the basics of use are there.
Thoughts on where to send him to buy a used iPhone?
Thanks in advance,
Robert

Actually thinking about it I usually find (dont buy on eBay.) my used computers confidently so I imagine u can get a good priced phone at Accurate Technologies which I believe has two 6 phones at $450 in Toronto,by willowdale street e of younge on Sheppard. Ur ext. lucky if u find at the most reliable Carbon Computing.. also I trust the guy at SimmplyMacs dufferin south

For his use, may I strongly suggest just use any compatible cell phone then buy the SIM card and set it up with 711 Speakout.

We have used their service for years after a friend suggested it and it costs us $25.00 - $50.00 / year for our limited use. Just pre-pay for the amount of time he may need.

If you want or need data, add $10.00/month I believe it is.

Check it out here:
Prepaid Cell Phones | No Contract Phones | SpeakOut™ 7-Eleven® Canada
Buy Prepaid Phones Online | SpeakOut™ 7-Eleven® Wireless

And also for more info:
The Unofficial FAQ
The Unofficial 7-Eleven Speak Out Wireless Canada Consumer Page

PS: I use an old Rogers Samsung flip-phone and my wife now uses an old iPhone 4 she basically got free from a neighbor who was upgrading.

JFYI: The speakout system just piggybacks onto the Rogers network, and has the same coverage. But no US roaming or use I don't think unless that's changed.

PS: They also sell compatible cell phones, some on sale now with $100 Voucher time purchase for $9.99, so you actually get the phone for free as it includes the SIM card!!!

Why not put a Wanted ad here on ehMac? Deal only with established reliable sellers who have a ton of posts.

Thanks all for the advice.
I am just seeking information though, not plans or actual phones.
He prefers /insists on doing that himself.

Just wanted to give him B&M or on-line store addresses to him.

If it is strictly for emergency I would first look at whatever company has the best coverage in the areas he is going in. Then, I would just get a flip phone, but a new one with a good battery. Should be cheap. After that a pay as you go plan.

I know, but I was just asked about iPhones.
All other advice just falls on deaf ears, sorry to say.
Just the way it is.
I said I'd ask around and I did.

Considering he is insisting on looking at getting a used iPhone for emergency use, that's strictly a case of super overkill and user ignorance as well as overspending I'd say, especially if he's wanting a recent model or is he suffering from some oncoming mental disorder.

That's like buying and using a sports car for an ambulance, but your local used for sale should certainly have lots of older iPhones for sale that would work and meet his wants.

BTW: Anyone involved checked here if he's that stubborn????:

You'll get more dependable used iPhones from reliable sellers here than you will from any brick and mortar store unless price is no object and Apple will sell you a refurbished iPhone.

Sometimes the answer is "Ask another way."

For emergency use I'd certainly not recommend an iPhone. Or a smart phone for that matter. In my experience, their antennae and/ or transmitting power are far less than those of simple old cellphones.

I live in a densely populated area, and use an iPhone 3GS as my only phone. But still, at home or in the (tiny) woods nearby my cell network keeps dropping out. Sometimes for 15 minutes on end.
Where would that leave you in an emergency...

With my trusty old Nokia 5100, cell coverage would never drop out even while camping near a lake in the south of France, with no cell transponder in sight for miles around!

Just being concerned about safety, sorry!
