Roger's called me yesterday and before trying to sell me anything, I declared that I'm happy with my current plan and that I'm not in the market for any deals or new products.
The rep then spun his deal by saying that I'm currently on the cheapest possible phone plan ($25/mth) and if I stay lock in with rogers for 3 more years he can guarantee that this price won't change.
I asked if Roger's was going to change the price on me, because as I understand, as long as I keep this plan they can't change it on me. He told me that this cheap price will no longer be offered soon so he can't guarantee that I'll still have it. I kept asking for clarification on how it would change if I didn't drop it, or change it. He just kept saying "I can only guarantee that if you agree to stay with Roger's for 3 years, it won't change".
Was this a major play on words as I suspect? Can Roger's change my $25 voice plan? I didn't buy into the game. I mostly use the iPhone for data and I know I'm grandfathered in to the 6 gig $30 plan. I probably use 10 minutes/mth voice tops so unless they're going to make that stuff cheaper, i'm covered.
They may not offer the plan anymore. But they shouldn't just up and change it on you. And if they do decide to change any details of the plan; I'm pretty sure they have to let you know in writing 30 or 90 days in advance or something like that. I wouldn't go and sign on for 3 more years unless I get a new phone out of the deal.
I've heard of carriers calling towards the end of a contract to try and get you to resign. They usually offer something at that point, rather than just threatening. Seems like a cheap move to me in this case.
As everybody else has mentioned they can't just change something on you with out notice.
Also... I don't think it's exactly fair to say just Rogers is bad or a a thief etc. because all the cell carriers are in on the same deceptive marketing and loopholes etc. wherever you can get the best deal at the time you want a new phone is "the best" at that time.
Plans get grandparented. Features do not. So, yes they can end some things you have (data discounts, e.g.) but on the whole, they don't usually, and calling in gets them back.

I appreciate all the feedback because these were my suspicions. I asked these questions concerning signing a NEW contract with no new phone...i was told it wouldn't affect that. I also said, I don't know where I'll be in 2 years, so I don't want to sign a Rogers contract. I was told..."don't worry, the cancellation fee won't be more than $50". ugh. anyway, glad to know my suspicions weren't unfounded.

Sent from my iPhone
I resigned a 3 year on the release of iPhone 4 so I have 1 more year left. But if iPhone 5 comes out in october, I'll be renewing again. They've got me anyway, but I don't need coaxing using spin.
I recently bought a new Acer Liquid E from rogers on a 1 year deal.
The phone arrived promptly and things went well for a couple of weeks; then the phone wouldn't take a charge so I dropped it off at Rogers and waited a month to get it back
Got the phone back and it still didn't work as they said I need a new battery and they wouldn't replace it.
They sent me a different non android Nokia and didn't tell me that they then reset my contract without my consent or knowledge!
